CO PUC Approves $110 million EV Infrastructure Plan

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission has approved Xcel Energy's $110 million proposal to increase Colorado's Electric Vehicle Infrastructure. This approval aims to put approximately 1 million Electric Vehicles on Colorado's roads in just 10 years time. As a major point in this proposal, the Commission made sure that Xcel's plan would benefit communities that are disproportionately affected by vehicle pollution, as well as low-income communities.

Xcel Environmental Policy Director Jack Ihle says to expect that anyone who is considering installing a charger at their home will be able to use a $500 rebate associated with the cost of wiring and procuring electric vehicle charging stations. This rebate would dramatically decrease the cost of installing an EV Charging station in ones home, as rates typically range from $600 to $1200, just for wiring, labor, and permitting.

"Xcel Energy seeks to reduce emissions from the electricity we provide our customers by 80% (from 2005 levels) by 2030, with a vision to provide 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050", says this Xcel Plan. Now it is up to the incoming Biden (and future) Administration(s) to bolster this trend by extending, or offering additional, renewable energy tax credits to Americans and Automobile Manufacturers to further reduce the hefty barrier to entry caused by the high cost of electric vehicle adoption.
